Driving green is really much easier to do than one might think. There are many things you can do to reduce your carbon emissions and greenhouse gases from driving. Whether it is driving to and from work or to and from the shopping center, you can make some simple and smart changes to make a difference to the environment. Carpooling is one of the best things you can do to drive green. If you carpool with three others to and from work every day, you will help to save an average of 25,000 pounds of greenhouse gases from being released into the atmosphere. Carpooling is fun and will save you a ton of gas money over the weeks, too. When choosing a new car, look for the fuel efficient models or hybrids. Hybrid cars are now very competitive with the rest of the market and affordable for most people. A fuel efficient car compared to mass transit may save even more carbon, according to some experts. The reason for this is because it is estimated that a bus that is half full is putting out as many carbon emissions as the amount of cars that the people on the bus would drive. If mass transit were always full then these estimates would be far different. Cruise control, in most cases, is a gas saver. It has been found in studies that the use of cruise control on the highway saves an average of 7 percent of CO2 output and saves in gas consumption. The exception to the rule is if you drive on roads that have a lot of hills, in this case cruise control will actually use more gasoline than without it. Properly inflated tires will save an average of 250 pounds of carbon emissions and will improve gas mileage by about 3 percent per year. This is especially true in the cold weather because the cold can compress the air in your tires. Your manual will probably suggest less air inflation in the winter than in the summer. So for the best driving green tip, carpool to and from work in a hybrid car with properly inflated tires using cruise control. You could save the world! |
